So I'm trying to download GIMP 2, since I saw someone else doing cool stuff with it that I wanna replicate. I have Windows 8 and Firefox, and I'm not exactly the greatest with computers. Now, when I go to the download site (I'll leave it below), I click "download now and I get the typical routine: A popup asking me to save the Gimp setup EXE, then it gets moved to my downloads. I click, then Window Smartsceen tells me it can't be reached, but it never can anyway so I run it anyway. User Account control comes up asking If I wanna allow this program to make changes to my computer, I say yes. For a split second I get a loading bar from the installer, then a message saying "The Installer was Unable to access the Server. Please try again later". What gives? What server? Am I stupid, is there something I'm missing here? I need this program soon so I really need to know what's going on. Should I try and get a download from somewhere else? If there's anyone who know's what I'm missing, please say something. I've got a pre-war racecar's good bits for your time.

Why not just go on *&@net and find Adobe CS4 design suite?

Which exact Windows 8 are you using? Windows 8, 8.1, or 8 RT?

Because torrenting is wrong especially when Gimp is a free alternative and if you desperately need photoshop you can get it with lightroom for $10 a month.

If he has Firefox he obviously isn't using RT.
I don't know why your Smartscreen filter is popping up though, that's only supposed to happen when IE is used to download something.
It sounds like that it's a stub installer though - an .exe you download that then downloads the entire program and installs it. Sometimes it's called a Web installer. Chrome and Firefox use them now too.

The *server* it's talking about accessing is probably its own files and not an actual server. Because some incredibly obtuse programming handles things that way. The problem may be that the file doesn't have administrative access to what amounts to... itself. Which you may need to download as well (the package). Or it's trying to pull the package from a real server - who knows? It's been a long time since I've messed with installing GIMP, but it's really Linuxey in that way - it's not really self-contained in the way you'd expect a Windows program to be.

Besides, learning how to make GIMP actually function like a program designed for human beings is half the fun.

Where is the .exe saved? Maybe try throwing it on your desktop and running as administrator from there.

Nobody said anything about torrenting. The place I am referring to is a place that you don't talk about to outsiders.

I tried that before and that didn't work either, but that backup link they provide did. I owe you again.

“torrenting is wrong”
I know what you’re getting at, but it still bugs me that people refer to torrents merely as a tool for piracy. The official GIMP download page that you linked to contains a torrent link as the preferred way to download GIMP.

Were you trying to download it by clicking the main, big bold link? That’s a torrent link. If you don’t have/use a torrent client, that was your problem.

Fine, piracy is wrong.
